Breakthrough On Online Freedom

Tell Congress We Need Net Neutrality

BREAKING: Rep. Mike Coffman, the first House Republican just signed on to the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution nullifying the FCC's action to end net neutrality! Victory is within reach. There are nationwide protests on July 19th to pressure other key lawmakers, see if there's one near you: BattlefortheNet.com. Also write and call your Representatives 202-759-7766. Tell Congress “Net Neutrality Means Internet Freedom.”

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) joins countless organizations and individuals who demand that the Congress act to keep the Internet free by protecting Net Neutrality. The highly respected independent publication Consumer Reports announced that a “survey shows that a majority of Americans favor net neutrality rules that prevent internet service providers (ISPs) from blocking lawful online content.”

Unfortunately, the FCC took extreme action to shut down freedom on the Internet. Still, Congress will have the final say over this policy. The Senate already voted to restore Internet Freedom. Now, the House has to act. Click here to tell your Representative to join you protecting Net Neutrality, and tell your Senators to stay strong for another vote.

CommonDreams reported:

Today, Representative Mike Coffman (R-CO) became the first GOP member of the House of Representatives to sign a discharge petition in an attempt to force a vote on the Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution to reverse the FCC’s unpopular repeal of net neutrality. With polls showing that Republican voters overwhelmingly want their lawmakers to support the CRA, the move could unleash a landslide of GOP support for the resolution to restore strong protections while Congress debates any potential future legislation.

While the CRA only requires a simple majority to pass, Rep Coffman has also chosen to introduce his own net neutrality legislation, which would do more to undermine net neutrality than protect it. The is largely symbolic, given that it will never reach the 60 votes it would need to pass the Senate.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC)'s ruling to allow the corporate control of the internet provoked a backlash. The Senate already felt the pressure and voted for Net Neutrality. Now, the House must also vote to protect the overwhelming majority of Americans who want and demand freedom to view websites of their choosing, to enjoy online entertainment without “throttling” or poor performance, and need full freedom of expression on the web.

Our people-based pressure forced the Senate to overturn the FCC’s plan to let Internet Service Providers (ISP's) like Comcast and Verizon determine what you can see and do on the Internet.
