Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) launched the Healthcare Not Warfare campaign ten years ago. Just in case you want to be planning now, we will mark the 10th anniversary and relaunch the campaign that, sadly, is more relevant leading into the Trump-Pence regime than it was under George W. Bush. We would like to have HNW vigils held across the country on Saturday, December 10th, 2016 International Human Rights Day. 

We are asking that PDA chapters everywhere hold public vigils and/or programs to call attention to the agreement to which the United States has been a party for 68 years and has yet to adopt fully in policy or practice. In case you would like to review the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that Eleanor Roosevelt helped draft with our other UN nations in 1948, you will find it here. The HNW campaign provides us with a trusted and ready frame. Please be creative but purposeful. As we get closer, we will provide press advisory templates and flyers for your use, and please let us know the location and time for your event/vigil.

A young person I know well who is highly educated and engaged put it this way to me this week, "If we do not resist and fight for the future, we will be handing over to our children a country much like Germany in 1939." Sobering. Progressives, I wish I could tell us all that is not true, that it could not be true. So, our attention and our intensity is required. We will not be able to prevent all attacks on all issues, but let's let this be our peaceful, courageous statement to one another,  to our neighbors and to the nation -- we want Healthcare NOT Warfare. And we will stand together to achieve our goal.

On Election Night, I listened to a very ill-informed and insensitive person celebrate the impending demise of the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare as a real victory. That's nonsense and inhumane. The ACA is flawed and terribly so, but there is no victory for any serious progressive in seeing millions and millions of people lose their health coverage, including people like me over 55 who will be unable to afford coverage under the Trump-Ryan plan.

We will now need to fully mobilize that strong majority of the American people who support an improved Medicare for all system as the only viable replacement, and we will need to stop the Trump regime from repealing the ACA until seamless transition into that Medicare for all program can be guaranteed. It is unacceptable to experiment with the health and the lives of millions of people. And House Speaker Paul Ryan is taking aim at Medicare, once again threatening to turn it into a voucher system.

We progressives stand ready to resist. To do otherwise would be un-American. Resist or die. Some of the changes coming through the fascist Trump-Pence regime are that immediately life-threatening.
