Only the Lonely is the Wrong Prescription for Healthcare

In 1960, Roy Orbison sang a lament, "Only The Lonely" about the heartache of solitude. In politics, it's not always so bad to be alone, especially when you're ahead of the curve. Still, it's much better when others join you. But loneliness is nothing to sing about when your insurance company abandons you in your time of need. That can be financially devastating and even fatal.

Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) is often among the first. We're used to attracting support to once-unpopular causes that—through the hard work of our activists and our allies—become mainstream. We were the first first national organization to urge Bernie Sanders to run for president as a Democrat, in large part because he has been a trailblazer on the most important issues, including declaring healthcare is a human right.

Please contribute generously now to ensure we have the resources we need to win the ColoradoCare ballot initiative, and to continue organizing for healthcare as a human right. If you live in or can travel to Colorado to help on the ground, please contact Donna Smith right now and she'll get you involved organizing for these critical upcoming weeks. Can't get to Colorado? Then sign up with Mike "Phone Guy" Fox to make easy but important calls right from your own home to help mobilize needed support for ColoradoCare. Young People Demand Medicare for All

Medicare for all / single-payer healthcare is among the most important initiatives that PDA and our allies have championed. One of our national advisory board members, Congressman John Conyers, has continually sponsored H.R. 676, legislation to create an expanded and improved Medicare-style national health program, and we've always supported that effort.

PDA believes that when you're injured or ill, you shouldn't be lonely or subject to the whims or the profit motives of enormous insurance companies. As recent examples like the Aetna-exit from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and the Epi-pen ripoff prove, Americans cannot trust their health to huge corporations. Greed always triumphs. But it doesn't have to be this way.

This Election Day, when Coloradans vote for candidates from the presidency to local offices, they will also determine the fate of ColoradoCare / Amendment 69. Last week, Bernie joined PDA endorsing the effort to guarantee quality healthcare to all Coloradans. If you live in or can travel to Colorado to help on the ground, please contact Donna Smith right now and she'll get you involved organizing for these critical upcoming weeks. With your help, PDA and our allies on the ground in Colorado can win this vote! We believe that once Americans see the success of the Colorado system, other states will quickly adopt these principles: "Patients Over Profits! Everybody In, Nobody Out!" Please contribute generously now to ensure we have the resources we need to win this ballot initiative, and to continue organizing for healthcare as a human right in the states and nationally.

We have pushed for expanded and improved Medicare for All, working alongside our allies including National Nurses United (NNU), Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP), Healthcare Now, Labor Campaign for Single Payer, and too many others to mention right now. Canada, our neighbors to the North have enjoyed a single-payer national health plan for years, but they didn't achieve that success all at once. They developed toward a nationwide system province-by-province, and it's possible for the United States to follow that example.

If Coloradans vote in favor of ColoradoCare / Amendment 69, we believe other states will follow. New York State, Vermont, California, and others are already making progress. A few states fell just short. With your help, PDA and our allies nationally and in Colorado can overcome special interest influence and win this vote! But we need your help right now! Please contribute generously to help win this ballot initiative, and to support our ongoing organizing for healthcare as a human right.

It's no exaggeration to say lives are at stake. People suffer and die just so huge insurance conglomerates can rake in obscene profits. The ACA is just a temporary measure that's left millions uninsured and millions more under-insured, and it's still a private-insurance based approach. Insurance companies routinely deny life-saving care as part of their business model. This is barbaric, unfair, and uneconomical.

We must do better, and it can begin in Colorado this November. It's time for the USA to join our advanced allies who have taken profiteering out of healthcare, and now get far better results than we do while spending less per person. If you live in or can travel to Colorado to help on the ground, please contact Donna Smith right now at [email protected] and she'll get you involved organizing for these critical upcoming weeks. An expanded and improved Medicare for All system would save lives and money. Waiting times for essential care would be shorter, as prevention and early treatment would help keep Americans out of hospitals. Never again will people face bankruptcy and abandonment from insurers because of a health problem. Will you join us in saying, "Never again?" Join with PDA and our allies now! Donate generously to support a potential breakthrough for healthcare, and to help PDA expand our organizing for healthcare as a human right.
