Spread The Word: PDA Speaks Out For Progress!

I purposely did not write a blast on April 4, 2018, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It seemed almost everyone was doing so, and so many of them had more right to their memorials than I.

My life has been one of white privilege and relative freedom when compared to most other people in this nation or even on the planet. But then I read—really read—the Rev. Jesse Jackson opinion piece published on April 4th in the New York Times, and I realized that if I had really understood the full message of Dr. King’s life, I not only had the right to express my views, I have a responsibility. To myself. To you. To my nation. To my world.

So, the next time someone says PDA rocks the boat a little too much with our resistance or that our insistence on positions that are impossibly idealistic or politically not feasible, read them a few of the words Rev. Jackson wrote:

“Today, it is the president himself who is inciting anguish, bigotry and fear.

“We are in a battle for the soul of America, and it’s not enough to admire Dr. King. To admire him is to reduce him to a mere celebrity. It requires no commitment, no action. Those who value justice and equality must have the will and courage to follow him. They must be ready to sacrifice.

“The struggle continues.”

Thank you for rocking the boat, making certain people uncomfortable, and taking free expression as your responsibility. Today, as the dogs of war are howling, could you please do me a favor? Share this email as widely as possible and help us get more outspoken activists.
