OFF Act Talking Points:

At a time when study after study reveals the increasing urgency of acting rapidly to move away from fossil fuels and onto 100% renewable energy, we’ve moved beyond the time for talk and must start acting. That is why we are supporting the Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act (“OFF Act”)

This visionary legislation recognizes that we must make massive changes to our energy system in the next decade if we are to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. Additionally, the bill recognizes the need to place racial and economic justice at the forefront of our efforts in the fight to save our planet.

Low-wealth communities and communities of color, including Native American communities, are being impacted first and worst by global warming. OFF Fossil Fuels addresses this reality by creating the Center for Clean Energy Workforce Development, which will create jobs, giving priority to disadvantaged communities, while transforming our energy economy, and putting us on a path to 100% renewable energy by 2035.

This legislation is thoughtful and comprehensive. Besides leading the United States to adopt 100% clean, renewable energy by 2035, the “OFF” act would also require 80% clean, renewable energy by 2027. It also would protect vulnerable environmental justice communities and assist displaced fossil fuel workers.

The bill would raise and recover billions of dollars currently spent on fossil fuels subsidies and lost to offshore tax loopholes, and redirect those funds to invest in clean energy innovation and implementation. This will help save the planet while creating new, high-paying, sustainable green jobs by developing technology and products we can use here and export to the rest of the planet.

The Off Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act will accomplish all these goals by:

Requiring that 80% of electricity sold and produced in the United States must come from clean energy by 2027, and 100% by 2035, and that all new cars and trains must be zero-emission / electric powered by 2035;

Raising and recovering billions of dollars currently spent on fossil fuels subsidies and lost to offshore tax loopholes, and redirecting those funds to invest in clean energy innovation and implementation, and halting new fossil fuel extraction projects—all starting next year;

Addressing the climate emergency directly, by avoiding indirect and ineffective mechanisms like cap and trade;

Promoting environmental and economic justice, while easing the transition for displaced fossil fuel workers to new, high-paying, sustainable green jobs;
